This year a newcomer to the club, Gulja Thielscher, brought a video breath of fresh air into the club and showed how creative a music video can be using a single camera and a lot of imagination. While new to our club, Gulja showed her experience in her winning video "Bennie James Sings". There was no doubt on the judges' part as to who deserved the top prize for this year.
The Peoples Choice for 2011 went to Frank McLeod in part as a sympathetic gesture for his rising so early to record a day in the life of two strappers at Bede Murray's Racing Stables, Conjola, NSW.
John Lovell Encouragement Trophy
This was the first year that this prize was awarded. Created to acknowledge the contribution to the club by founding member and more recently Life MemberJohn Lovell, the trophy was beautifully made by our Treasurer, Howard Anderson, as a brass replica of a tripod, a design suggested by Tony Mann.
The in augural winner of the JLET for the year 2011 another new member, Bob Flynn. It was fitting that the prize was presented to Bobby the man after whom the tropy was named - John Lovell.
A first time entrant in any type of video competition, Bob impressed everyone with his video about a young English woman's entry into the Brompton Bicyle Race. Bob says that he was encouraged to enter by Tony Mann and used some of the techniques he picked up as a member to put this original footage in its final form.
Video of the Year 2010
Frank McLeod was the fortunate winner of both the Video of the Year and People's Chioce with his nonsense video on hard-to-wash windows.
The time between updates has got a bit out of hand, but herewith some of the activities of MUVC since the last update.
Hobby Video
For the combined meeting with Shoalhaven, Wollongong and ACT video clubs, some of the members combined to do a video showing various members in pursuit of their hobbies. It really does make you wonder if we should have a personality assessment before accepting membership applications.
MudSingers Gala Performance 2009
In late 2009, members attended and recorded the fund-raising performance of this 'a capella' group whose repertoire is strongly rooted in African choral music. Some links to YouTube postings will be available at a later time.
Video of the Year 2009
Tony Mann, Vice-President and long-standing member swept the pools this year with his movie 'Puffing Billy', winning both the coveted VOTY prize as judged by ACT club members and the People's Choice Award on the vote of those present at the annual Christmas Party when all entered movies were shown.
May-June 2009
Since the last update, MUVC members have really been busy, with more projects on the horizon, and most involving other community groups. That has to be a good sign for the future.
As well as all this, we have had a change in meeting venue, potentially in the long term, thanks to having a function room at Mollymook Golf Club made available to us. It is hoped this will prove to be more convenient for current and new members into the future.
Another sign of progress is the fact that, at almost every meeting this year, we have had visitors, most of whom have become or have indicated their intention to become members of MUVC.
Also, we have added a new section (still in its early phase) to the club's website about individual club members and their personal projects. Check that out here.
Chooks on a Hot Tin Roof
Now we didn't chose the name but a group of local Milton-Ulladulla women have grabbed this title for their ukelele group and recently asked our club to give them a YouTube presence. While some of the members were a little hesitant, especially in regard to the personal clips, they bravely went ahead and you can see the result somewhere about here:
Peter
Pan flies at
Milton
In the later part of June 2009, the Milton Follies Inc theatre group will stage a children’s production of ‘Peter Pan’. MUVC was asked if it could help by shooting a scene which showed the four main characters, Peter, Wendy, John and Michael, flying to ‘Neverland’. During this journey the young fliers are attacked by the nefarious Captain Hook firing a canon from his pirate ship. On 2nd May, 2009, after the construction of four ‘flying boxes’ and a lot of ‘high chroma’ blue painting of one long-suffering member’s garage, the scene was recorded and then edited using Adobe’s Premiere Pro and After Effects.
The promotional poster showing the main characters flying, was produced and designed by Malcolm King of King's Art Gallery, Milton, NSW, (http://www.kingstudio.com.au) using an image exported from the video shot on the day and is shown below.
While there had been
‘blue-screen’ projects done before, this was by far the most complex
and a good
deal was learned, more so in retrospect about the need for very good lighting as
well as
about the software used. You can sneak a preview at the result below.
Squadron
723 Squirrel Helicopter
Pairs Display
Two club members attended the air show at Albion Park Aerodrome on the 22nd February, 2009 to record the precision flying display of two Squirrel helicopters by members of Squadron 723 based at HMAS Albatross, Nowra. The club was fortunate enough to have had access to a VIO POV1 helmet camera, courtesy of Launch Helmet Cameras, Western Australia which was fixed inside the cockpit while two more pedestrian records were shot from ground level. Subsequently, a short 11 minute DVD has been produced and presented to the RAN with the intention that copies will be made available at future air shows as souvenirs while at the same time perhaps enticing future servicemen and women to look more closely at the Navy as a career. Those involved received a very complimentary letter from the Commanding Officer of 723 Squadron, thanking them for their efforts.
International Day of Prayer
On 6th March
2009, at the request of Mrs Diana Lyons, President of the
Milton-Ulladulla
Catholic Women’s League, Club members attended and recorded a
multicamera video
of the Day of Prayer service held at the Ulladulla Catholic Church. This was attended by representatives of many
if not all of the Christian churches in the area as well as by the High
Commissioner for Papua/New Guinea, whose country had arranged the
program for
this particular year’s event. The end
result
was a DVD of the event, including two videos shown in the church on the
day. It is anticipated that copies of
the DVD will be made available to elderly residents in Sarah Claydon
Retirement Village in
the area who were unable to attend.
February 2009
One of the most significant, certainly in terms of
this web page was the departure of Annie Stanton, our 'webmaster' from
the local area and our club. She will be missed as an active member as
well as for her work in establishing this web page.
On a more positive note, there has been
an influx of new members, gladly welcomed by the 'old stagers'.
As to club activities, MUVC has been
pretty busy. We have developed something of a niche 'expertise' doing
multicamera shoots of local musical and theatre performances,
particularly by the Milton Follies and the Milton-Ulladulla
Entertainers. We have been invited to record a number of productions
and it appears all have been satisfied by the outcome. By charging a
small fee, the club has accrued sufficient funds over time to purchase
equipment which enhances our activities.
We now have our own video projector and
screen, a PVR (personal video recorder) which will play high definition
movies through the projector or a HDTV, a DVD/VCR recorder/player and a
laptop which can be used, through the projector, for demonstrations and
also for editing.
A lot of this equipment was used this
week when we held a workshop on multicamera editing. The idea behind
this day was for members to be 'brought up to speed' in order to share
the editing load of multicam projects as well as ensuring the
continuity of the club's ability to perform this function.
With the re-activation of this web page,
it is fondly hoped to keep enough information coming in to make it
useful to members and interesting to visitors.
Arcadia News Review
With the cooperation of the management of
the Arcadia Twin Cinema, the club has been preparing short
locally-orientated newsreel-type presentations which are shown at the
time of the school holidays. Topics range from profiling local
organisations, such as the Royal volunteer Coastal Patrol to coverage
of special sporting events and even the history of the local public
pool. Each production begins with a fanfare, shown below.
Video of the Year 2008
Each year the club holds a
Video of the Year competition, with members competing for the Phillip
Lefevre Memorial Trophy. This year, the winning video by Frank McLeod - shown below -
was also fortunate enough to take home the People's Choice Award.
Serious challenges have already been issued for this year's competition.
